What is real, Eila?

When Eila Doyle first hears the strange boy calling from somewhere deep in her sleep, she begins to question her sanity. In the gleaming steampunk world of Waldron's Gate, citizens aren't meant to dream -- and those who eschew their daily Crumble and dare to do so anyway face madness … and imprisonment in Joffrey Columns, the asylum of towers.

And yet, "Dreaming" of a very specific sort is what Eila does every day at the Ministry of Manifestation with her mind hooked to the great engine, called the Blunderbuss. She's accustomed to using her thoughts to Build all that the city needs … but never before have her thoughts been so dark, so laced with demons and shadows. Now those nighttime visions hint at dark conspiracy, a millennium of lies, and a fathomless secret hiding beneath the quiet streets.

As Eila follows the boy down the rabbit hole, she discovers secrets that were meant to remain hidden. She discovers an unknown caste of underlings, an unknown place underneath the city. And she learns of her terrible destiny as her own dreams and reality blur, as "what is real?" becomes something uncertain.

This thrilling young adult dystopian adventure is the first in the Dream Engine series by masters of story Platt & Truant, authors of The Beam, Unicorn Western, and many more. The Dream Engine will have you asking yourself "What is real?" along with Eila's strong female lead -- but watch what you ask for, because the answer may unsettle and disturb you for weeks to come.

Do you dream? What about nightmares? Do you have them? If not, why?

Eila Doyle has been having dreams, or maybe nightmares - she's not sure. The only thing she is sure about is that she shouldn't be having them. Not at all. No one does. Is she going mad, or is she tentatively grasping at the truth that has been hidden for centuries?

The Dream Engine is a fantastic coming of age tale that probes the boundaries of reality and fantasy, control and chaos. When Eila seeks to find answers to her sudden visions, she is sucked down a rabbit hole of discovery that will forever change her, her family, and life as she knows it. Platt and Truant have constructed a new world loaded with dissonance, where machine and mind collide and collaborate, where societies are free and, yet, imprisoned. A world where all of past understanding and future perceptions depend on one girl getting it right, facing her fears, and coming to an understanding of who she is, what she can do, and why she should act.

This is a page turner that will have you up late into the night, and I couldn't recommend it more.

The Dream Engine eBook Sean Platt Johnny B Truant Realm and Sands Reviews

I love when authors write a young adult novel that doesn't feel like a young adult novel. This is the kind of book I'd be excited to see my daughter read, if I had one. Not only is the heroine relatable (who hasn't made stupid choices, or tried to ignore a problem, going it would go away, only to get kicked in the face with the consequences later?), but she's engaging and believable.

FANTASTIC job, guys. Now hurry and put out the next one! I want to know what happens with Cora!
I love The Dream Engine because it has great characters and an intricate and well-executed plot with as many moving parts as the Blunderbuss--the titular dream engine. When I read and listened to this story (I have the audio version as well), I felt truly transported; it was a little jarring to come back to the real world. And how perfect for this story in which Eila has a hard time discerning what's real and what's not. I appreciate a YA that isn't dumbed down. This story includes complicated problems that are great metaphors for our own challenges in life. If you are looking for a smart, entertaining, and thoughtful read, you can't go wrong with The Dream Engine.
The Dream Engine is a magical book that explores what it is to believe and the right of individuals to own their dreams and creativity. Follow young Eila as she begins to question what her society has always held to be true, and to experiment with bucking the norm in pursuit of her own truth. What is on one level a touching, thrilling, and entrancingly captivating read transforms into a deeper message that speaks to today’s readers, young and old.

I did find a few errors in the book which come purely from the rush with which the book was produced. It speaks to the value of taking the required time to edit. But the errors are minor and do little to detract from the pure magic and pleasure the story provides.

I had the joy of watching Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant (with David Wright) breathe this book into being. I’m still in awe with the way this book went from nothing to published in just 30 days! It's a wonderful read and I highly recommend it.
I found out about this book through a blog, and read a bit about the Kickstarter campaign for the book on the Fiction Unboxed site. I applaud their efforts for writing a decent book in 30 days, and think it's very generous that the intent behind Fiction Unboxed was to help beginning indie authors see Sean and Johnny's writing process from start to finish. Yes, the book is good...towards the end. Is the book well-written? Not particularly, but it's a fun, quick read. I felt as though the book took awhile to get started plot-wise and character development-wise. There are times when I felt that things are "over-explained (something I have noticed in a few of their other books)." I would have preferred a more "show don't tell" approach to laying the groundwork for how their world works. Towards the end of the book, I did start to care about what happened to a few of the main characters, and the ending did leave me wanting to know what happens next! Hopefully with Fiction Unboxed 1.5 (in which Sean and Johnny are writing books 2 and 3 in the series), the guys will have hit their stride! The world the authors have created is definitely intriguing, and I will read the next book!
The characters are interesting and there's so much potential for coming books - I can hardly wait. The way the book came about is unique as well.

The worlds, both above, below and beyond, are detailed and contain just enough real world references to make the jump off the page real - it's also a veiled lesson about looking beneath the everyday to see the reality of life. These authors are always clever about inserting political and social undercurrents in their stories, and they've done it again here. This helps keep the tension going in the story and also makes it relatable for the reader.

This promises to be another highly entertaining and addictive series, and I'm sure everyone who has read this first book is impatiently awaiting the second!
This book came about from the writer's Fiction Unboxed project where they wrote a 100K word book in 30 days. It's got a lot of original elements in it and a few standard elements. The project that birthed The Dream Engine gave them some constraints that they won't have in the sequels and I'm looking forward to seeing how they resolve some of the "behind the scenes" problems they accidently put in the story.

If you are coming to this book without the Fiction Unboxed backstory, your mileage may vary from the 5 star reviews, but I've gotta say it's still worth the time. It's an easy read and there are enough cool elements in it that you'll likely want to see what happens next. The Dream Engine is NOT a cheap cliffhanger, it's a complete story. Platt and Truant were very deliberate about making sure it was a complete story and I applaud them for that.
